Physical Education Instructor
I am a Certified Basketball Trainer and have been teaching Physical Education and Basketball for years. There is no full time Bilingual PE teacher at my school and I organize and teach..
Volleyball – The students are formed in teams of 6 and practice this fast-moving sport and learn the rules involving serving, attack, digging, smashing and play within the boundaries of the court.
Badminton – Learn the skill of using a racket sport, again learning the rules and the moves that this sport entail. I also work privately with the children who find using the racket and hitting the birdie more complicated until they are more confident and can play with the rest of the group.
Parkour (Parcours) – The student practice the activity of moving using movements that originated in the French military. This is movement in urban spaces and can be practiced alone or with others and the children enjoy this way of getting fit, especially the boys.
Dance – This is also a great way to improve fitness and have fun at the same time. I notice that the girls especially like this activity, although the boys join in and in the end have fun as well.
Football - Most of the students begin with a basic knowledge of this sport and so enjoy this team sport right from the beginning. We organize mini-leagues in order to factor in the spirit of competition.
General physical exercises – The students practice basic fitness activities for warm-up, stretching, HIIT exercise, simple weight-training etc. With all of the above I try to introduce them to the idea of cross-training
Of course, I do all this in English, and as I was born in Madrid my Spanish is at native level as well.
GAMES and ACTIVITIES
Because my parents teach English I have access to board games like scrabble, monopoly, the game of life, trivial pursuit, taboo, scattegories and many more. A few other activities that I would like to mention are…
Conversation Dice
I made dice with pictures on each face of the die. When the student throws the dice he or she has to make a correct sentence using the pictures shown. This is a team game and is played for points.
Crossword Puzzles
There are many crossword puzzle links on internet that help teachers create their own puzzles. We use these to reinforce vocabulary done in class.
Easy to understand videos
For example we use “Watch Mojo” which focuses on the top 10 of something. The students watch these for commenting later as a group or in pairs.
Hangman
This popular game is used to get student to practice their spelling skills as well as review vocabulary.
Story Building
The students select flash cards and build a story using the flash cards selected.
Verb/Subject/Object Game
On slips of paper we have 30 verbs, 30 subjects, and 30 objects. We make two teams and hand out 15 of each type. The team must make skeleton sentences with these slips of paper. Then one team tell the other how to form the sentence; eg put the sentence in the simple present, question form. In order to get a point the team has to put their skeleton sentence in this form.
Songs
Students learn the lyrics of popular songs by:
Filling in the blanks, or
Selecting the line sung as the singer is singing it, or
Correcting vocabulary that is written incorrectly on purpose.
Of course, I do this in English, and as I was born in Madrid my Spanish is at native level as well.
